12. The Beautiful Irony

Vienna, Austria

Anyone who knows me knows that I love soccer. This photo was take at a Rapid Wien game (Vienna’s true team suck it Austria Wien). They were playing Spanish side Valencia in a Europa league game. Despite loving soccer you have to admit that there are some obvious issues with the game and fan support. It seems ironic that FIFA would preach “RESPECT” boldly on the field while nearby Rapid fans display a massive banner “PUTA VALENCIA”.

This irony was lost on almost everyone there, including myself. I was too enthralled with the game and the atmosphere to notice. Maybe thats why they call it The Beautiful Game. Players and fans alike talk about the game having a musical, theatrical quality. The constant motion, the chants, the emotion. It’s unlike other sports. Baseball and football constantly stop and start but soccer is always moving. Like with anything else soccer has its good and bad. I guess all we can do is watch.
