16. The Swiss Guard

Europe’s courtly history persists through the 21st century. Pictured here is the one of the gates on the side of St. Peters. It is guarded by the Swiss Guard who have been protecting the pope and the church for centuries. They are remnants of the European court culture where Kings, Queens, Knights and Nobles would travel the land making merry and dividing up the continent. The Swiss Guard were unique in that if you had the money you could buy their unquestioned and absolute loyalty. Despite wearing silly clothes they are certainly intimidating
